Justice for Hazle Emotional Support Cat Found Frozen in Summit Lake

A heartbreaking case of animal cruelty has shaken the Akron, Ohio community. Hazle, a beloved emotional support cat, was found frozen inside a pet carrier on Summit Lake nearly a month after she went missing.

A Cat Who Was More Than a Pet

Hazle was more than just a cat to her guardian, Mario Mercado—she was his emotional support animal, helping him cope with anxiety and depression. She went everywhere with him, often perched on his shoulder, offering comfort and companionship.

Over the holidays, Hazle slipped out of a bathroom window at Mercado’s home. Despite efforts to find her, she remained missing—until a tragic discovery was made weeks later.

A Devastating Discovery

Crystal Riggi, a dedicated cat rescuer, received multiple reports about a suspicious pet carrier on the frozen lake. When she went to investigate, she was devastated by what she found.

“I was hoping that there was nothing inside,” Riggi told 19 News. “But unfortunately, she was inside, frozen, and from the looks of it, she had passed in the bag.”

Hazle’s emotional support tag led Riggi to Mercado, who was heartbroken to learn of her fate. Seeing his beloved companion frozen solid was an unbearable sight.

Seeking Justice for Hazle

This tragic case has raised concerns about animal abandonment and cruelty in the Akron area. Riggi has stated that Hazle is not the only cat to be dumped near Summit Lake, and she hopes awareness will help put an end to these senseless acts.

“I don’t care if you like cats or not—no animal should have to suffer like that,” Riggi said. “Especially one that gives its whole heart to its owner.”

Akron Police are actively investigating Hazle’s death, reviewing security footage and looking for leads.
